Remember the old 1970’s song: “Listen to what the man said?”
This is your first step in starting out in Social Media.
If you are just venturing into Social Media you may be wondering what should you do first. Beyond setting up your basic Twitter, Facebook, Buzz and LinkedIn accounts, and setting up your WordPress Blog Website your first next step should be to listen.
Chances are, if you or your company is new to Social Media and having much of a presence on the Internet, it is likely that not too many are talking about you, your company or your brand.
Listen If They Are Not Talking About You
We’re here to suggest that there is plenty to do to get your feet wet and your legs underneath you.
First of all, even though you are new, there are plenty of people in the Social Media sphere who are not new and chatter all the time your competitors.
Your potential customers are talking about what they love about your competitors, and about what they don’t love about your competitors’ products and services.
Your job when you just start out is to listen – listen to what your potential customers are saying. From what they are saying you can engage in the conversation or connect with them. What you don’t want to do however, is go bait fishing for your competitors’ customers or fans.
Provide Solutions To Problems Don’t Sell Your Products
Rather than selling, you should be listening and providing solutions when you can. Solutions look like FAQ’s, or tips on how to solve problems that you know something about that may or may not be related to your business. With the soft sell solutions provider approach you can gain a reputation for being a problem solver which will have people tend to seek you out over time – because they will start to trust you.
Once they come to you, then you can let them know about your company’s products and services.
You can find relevant conversations all over the Social Media sites and by doing some searches in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Ask some questions yourself and soon you’ll find yourself chattering away too.
